Many Americans who move to Austria end up selling the car or never buying one. Vienna in particular has a public transport network that makes a car optional for daily life, and an annual pass that costs less than many American monthly parking contracts. This guide covers how Vienna's tickets work, what they do not cover, and how to save on intercity trains with the national railway, ÖBB. Prices come from Wiener Linien and ÖBB.
Vienna's core zone
Most Vienna tickets are valid in the "Kernzone Wien", the core zone. According to Wiener Linien, the core zone covers all public transport within Vienna: buses, trams, the U-Bahn, the Badner Bahn and ÖBB trains, as well as most regional bus lines.
The exceptions catch new arrivals out. Core zone tickets do not cover:
- trips to or from Vienna Airport, because the airport lies beyond the zone boundary at Schwechat;
- airport buses;
- the City Airport Train (CAT);
- Westbahn and RegioJet trains;
- Flixbus and tourist services.
A core zone ticket on the airport route is valid only up to the zone boundary. For the airport you need an extension or a separate ticket for the service you take.
Single tickets
A single ticket is valid for one trip in one direction within the core zone. You may change lines as often as you need, but you may not break the journey. If you buy a paper ticket, you must validate it before your first ride; validity starts at that moment.
Wiener Linien also notes that if you take children or animals along, you buy reduced tickets for them. Children from age six to 15 travel with a reduced ticket together with photo ID or a student ID from an Austrian school.
The annual pass
For residents, the Jahreskarte WIEN, the annual pass, is the backbone. It is valid for 365 days from the first day of the month you choose, on the U-Bahn, trams, buses (except special express bus lines), ÖBB S-Bahn trains and the Badner Bahn as far as Vösendorf-Siebenhirten. Like other core zone tickets, it does not cover the airport, the CAT, Westbahn trains or tourist services.
### 2026 prices
Wiener Linien lists these prices:
| Pass | One payment | Monthly debit, total | |---|---|---| | Jahreskarte Digital WIEN | €461 | €500.40 | | Jahreskarte WIEN | €467 | €506.40 | | Digital Senior, Youth or Special | €294 | €309 | | Senior, Youth or Special | €300 | €315 |
Paying once in full is cheaper than monthly debits, and the digital version, shown in the WienMobil app, is cheaper than the card.
### Senior and youth passes
The Senior pass is a reduced fare for people aged 65 and over. The Youth annual pass is open to everyone under 26, whatever their education or job. Since February 1, 2026, it has replaced the semester ticket and the holiday monthly ticket. For American families with university-age children, this is a significant change: a student under 26 now uses the same reduced annual pass as any other young person.
### Renewal, loss and the 2027 increase
To renew, you pay for the new annual pass by the 15th of the last month of your current one, by payment slip, bank transfer or in person at a Wiener Linien info and ticket office. A lost or stolen card can be replaced for a 15 euro fee with an official loss or theft report, or you can display the pass in the WienMobil app.
Wiener Linien has announced new fares from January 1, 2027. The tariffs now adjust each year with the consumer price index; for 2027 the change is 3.45 percent, based on the index between July 2025 and June 2026. From that date:
- the annual pass costs 483.10 euros with one payment, or 1.32 euros a day;
- the Youth, Senior and Special annual passes cost 310.40 euros;
- a single trip costs 3.10 euros digitally or 3.30 euros on paper.
Tickets bought at the old tariff remain valid for six months after the change, until June 30, 2027 in this case. Unused tickets can be exchanged for an equal or higher-value ticket, or bought back with a 10 percent deduction, until December 31, 2027.
### Jobticket
Ask your employer about the Jobticket. Wiener Linien offers annual passes to companies that order at least 10 Jobtickets and manage them themselves. The Jobticket comes in standard, Youth (under 26) and Senior (65 and over) versions.
Intercity trains with ÖBB
For travel between cities, ÖBB runs the national rail network. Its main discount card is the Vorteilscard, which gives 50 percent off ÖBB standard tickets and can be bought up to six months in advance. ÖBB lists these annual prices:
| Card | Price per year | Who can get it | |---|---|---| | Vorteilscard Classic | €73 | Everyone | | Vorteilscard Comfort | €89 | Everyone, also 50% off seat reservations | | Vorteilscard Jugend | €21 | Under 26 | | Vorteilscard Family | €21 | Adults travelling with children | | Vorteilscard Senior | €31 | 65 and over | | Senior on low income | free | 65 and over on low income |
Holders also pay up to 50 percent less on most Austrian private railways, though the Family card is recognized only on a few. Other benefits listed by ÖBB include a 50 percent discount on the City Airport Train, a reduced fare on the Vienna Airport Bus, and no registration fee for ÖBB Rail&Drive car sharing.
### Vorteilscard or KlimaTicket
The Vorteilscard suits people who take a train trip every month or two. If you plan to commute between cities or travel by train very often, the KlimaTicket Ö, which covers public transport across Austria for a year, may cost less in total. Compare your expected trips against both options before choosing.
Getting to and from the airport
Because the airport is outside the core zone, plan this trip separately. Wiener Linien lists the options that serve it, including ÖBB trains, airport buses and the CAT. With a core zone annual pass, you only need a ticket for the section beyond the zone boundary on regular ÖBB trains, while the CAT and airport buses need their own tickets. Vorteilscard holders get 50 percent off the CAT.
Practical tips
- Buy the annual pass in one payment if cash flow allows.
- Use the digital version in WienMobil to save a few euros and avoid replacing a lost card.
- Under 26? Get the Youth annual pass.
- Ask HR about the Jobticket before buying your own pass.
- Get a Vorteilscard if you take regular train trips but not enough for a KlimaTicket.
- Remember that your pass stops at the zone boundary on the way to the airport.
Common questions
How much is a Vienna annual transit pass? The Jahreskarte WIEN costs €467 with one payment, or €461 in digital form, under the 2026 tariff. From January 1, 2027 the annual pass costs €483.10.
Does the Vienna annual pass cover the airport? No. Vienna Airport lies outside the core zone, so you need a ticket for the trip beyond the zone boundary, and the CAT and airport buses need their own tickets.
What is the ÖBB Vorteilscard? An annual discount card giving 50 percent off ÖBB standard tickets. The Classic version costs €73 a year; youth, family and senior versions cost less.
Is there a student pass in Vienna? Since February 1, 2026, the Youth annual pass for everyone under 26 replaced the semester ticket. It costs €300, or €294 in digital form.
