Americans moving to Austria get a fairly generous deal on driving. A US license is accepted for a limited time after you settle, and when that period ends you can exchange it for an Austrian license for passenger cars without taking a practical driving test. The catch is the deadline. Miss it and your US license stops being valid for driving in Austria, and the easy route closes. This guide sets out the rules as published by the federal portal oesterreich.gv.at, the Vienna police traffic office and the Driving Licence Act implementing regulation.

Visiting versus living in Austria

The rules below apply once you establish residence. The Vienna police explain that holders of a license from outside the European Economic Area may drive for six months from the moment they establish their main residence in Austria, which means entering the country and registering your address.

The license you carry must also be readable. According to the police, a foreign license counts as proof of your right to drive if it is written in German or follows the old pink format divided into classes A to E. A US license is neither, so you need an International Driving Permit or a translation alongside it. The federal portal says the same: a foreign license not written in German is valid only together with an international license or a translation.

Get the International Driving Permit in the United States before you leave. It is issued there, not in Austria.

The six-month deadline

The federal portal is precise on timing. A license from a country outside the EU and EEA must be exchanged within six months of first establishing a residence in Austria. After six months, the foreign license loses its validity for driving in Austria.

Put this date in your calendar on the day you register your address. The six months run from that point, not from the date you receive a residence permit card.

Exchange without a driving test

As a rule, exchanging a license from outside the EU or EEA requires a practical driving test. The Driving Licence Act implementing regulation (FSG-DV, Section 9) lists exceptions. For class B, which covers ordinary passenger cars, licenses from the United States are treated as issued under the same conditions as in Austria. That means no practical test for a US class B exchange.

This exception covers class B only. If you hold a motorcycle or commercial license, you should expect to take a practical test for those classes.

### The six months in the issuing country

The Vienna police add one condition that matters for some Americans. Applicants must show that, when they obtained the foreign license, they had their main residence or had stayed at least six months in the issuing country. This proof is not needed if you hold the citizenship of the issuing state. For a US citizen with a US license, that generally settles the point.

The federal portal notes that only valid foreign licenses can be exchanged, and that the applicant must be at least 18.

How the exchange works

You apply at a driving licence authority. In cities with a state police directorate, that is the police; in Vienna it is the traffic office of the Vienna police, the Verkehrsamt, at Dietrichgasse 27 in the 3rd district. Elsewhere it is the district authority. The Vienna police require an appointment booked through their online system.

### Documents

The Vienna police list for a non-EEA exchange includes:

  1. The original license, plus a copy.
  2. Your passport, plus a copy.
  3. Your residence permit, plus a copy.
  4. A medical report no older than 18 months, issued by an authorized doctor. The list of authorized doctors is available at police district offices, the motoring clubs ARBÖ and ÖAMTC, and the Vienna traffic office.
  5. A translation of the license where needed, for example if the classes or validity dates are not clear.

The federal portal adds a photo in portrait format, 35 x 45 mm, and notes that proof of registration can be replaced by the authority checking the Central Register of Residents.

### Fees and what happens to your US license

The exchange fee listed on the federal portal is 90 euros. Medical report costs and any test fees are not included.

Under the FSG-DV, the authority keeps the exchanged foreign license and sends it to the issuing authority. In some cases a license may be held and returned if you leave Austria and give up your residence, in exchange for the Austrian license. If you want to keep driving in the United States on visits, think about this before you apply, and ask the authority how it will handle your license.

If the authority sends your license for a forensic check, it must give you a confirmation of the classes you hold, which allows you to keep driving meanwhile.

Motorway vignette

To use Austrian motorways and expressways, vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes need a vignette. You can choose a sticker or a digital vignette linked to your license plate. A digital vignette can cover up to three vehicles on an interchangeable plate.

Timing matters with the digital version:

  • An annual vignette is valid for the calendar year but usable from December 1 of the previous year until January 31 of the following year. The 2026 vignette runs from December 1, 2025 to January 31, 2027.
  • A digital annual or two-month vignette bought online by a consumer becomes valid 18 days after purchase at the earliest, because of the legal right of withdrawal for distance sales.
  • One-day and ten-day digital vignettes can be bought online with immediate validity.

Some alpine sections charge a separate toll instead of accepting the vignette. Check your route before a ski trip.

Winter tires

From November 1 to April 15, cars and vans up to 3.5 tonnes may only be driven in wintry conditions, meaning snow, slush or ice on the road, if all wheels have winter tires. Snow chains on at least two drive wheels are an alternative, but only if the road is covered by a continuous layer of snow or ice.

A tire counts as a winter tire only if it is marked "M+S", "M.S." or "M&S", or carries the snowflake symbol. All-season tires qualify only if they carry one of these markings.

Alcohol limits

The general legal limit is below 0.5 per mille of alcohol in the blood. A breath reading of 0.25 mg/l corresponds to 0.5 per mille. A lower limit of 0.1 per mille applies in certain cases, including during supervised practice drives and driving school lessons, and for certain license categories. Drivers who exceed the limits face an administrative fine, and depending on the level, an entry on the license record or withdrawal of the license.

A checklist for your first six months

  1. Bring a valid US license and an International Driving Permit.
  2. Register your address and note the date six months later.
  3. Book a medical report with an authorized doctor.
  4. Book an appointment with the licence authority and gather your documents.
  5. Buy a vignette before using the motorway.
  6. Fit winter tires before November.

Common questions

How long can I drive in Austria on my US license after moving? Six months from establishing your main residence. After that the license loses its validity and must be exchanged.

Do Americans need a driving test to get an Austrian license? Not for class B passenger cars. US licenses are on the list in Section 9 of the FSG-DV. Other classes generally require a practical test.

Do I need an International Driving Permit in Austria? A license not written in German is valid only with an international license or a translation, so bring one with your US license.

How much does the license exchange cost? The federal portal lists 90 euros for the exchange, not including the medical report.
