Sweden has no digital nomad visa and no retirement visa. An American who wants to live there needs a residence permit tied to a clear purpose: a job with a Swedish employer, a business you run, a relationship with someone already settled in Sweden, or study. Each route has its own requirements, set out by the Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket), and the rules for work permits changed significantly on 1 June 2026. This guide compares the main routes for US citizens and shows where each one must be started.

Visiting is not moving

The United States is not on the Swedish government's list of countries whose citizens need a visa to enter the Schengen area, so Americans can visit without one. A Schengen stay is limited to 90 days in any 180-day period. Visitors without an entry visa must still meet the border requirements the Migration Agency lists: a passport valid for at least three months after you plan to leave the Schengen area, a return ticket within 90 days, an invitation or booking, and money for your stay and return.

A visitor's residence permit covers longer visits, but it is valid for one visit and gives no right to work or settle in Sweden. You must intend to leave after your stay, be able to support yourself and hold individual medical travel insurance for the whole stay; the agency recommends cover of at least EUR 30,000. The fee is SEK 1,500 for adults.

Work permit for employees

The work permit is the main route for Americans with a job offer.

### Requirements

The Migration Agency lists these requirements, all of which the one job must meet (you cannot combine jobs):

  • a valid passport;
  • an employment contract signed by you and the employer;
  • pay and conditions at least on par with Swedish collective agreements or common practice in the profession;
  • employer-provided health, life, industrial injury and occupational pension insurance by the time you start;
  • for jobs of up to one year, a comprehensive health insurance policy covering medical care, hospitalisation, emergency dental care and medical repatriation;
  • the salary requirement.

### The salary requirement

Since 1 June 2026, your monthly salary must be at least 90% of the median salary published by Statistics Sweden when you apply. From 16 June 2026 the median is SEK 38,300, so the floor is SEK 34,470 a month. Your pay must also match collective agreements, which can mean a higher figure. Listed occupations and some groups are exempt but must still reach 75% of the median.

### Process and cost

The employer starts the application in the e-service, the relevant trade union is given the chance to comment, and you then complete your part. A first application must be made from outside Sweden. The fee is SEK 2,200 for employees, SEK 1,500 for adult family members and SEK 750 for children. A permit runs for up to two years, no longer than the contract or your passport, and can be extended.

The agency's processing statistics show that 75% of recent complete applications for highly qualified workers were decided within one month, and within four months for other employment.

### EU Blue Card

The EU Blue Card is a separate permit with its own salary threshold, which the agency states as SEK 53,625. From 1 June 2026 it can be granted for up to four years at a time.

Self-employment

If you plan to run your own business in Sweden, the Migration Agency requires that you:

  • have good experience in the industry and in running a business;
  • have relevant knowledge of Swedish or English, and very good Swedish if you will deal with many Swedish suppliers or customers;
  • run the business and own at least 51% of it;
  • have a credible budget and established customer contacts;
  • hold at least SEK 200,000 in a bank account in your name, plus SEK 100,000 for an accompanying spouse and SEK 50,000 for each child;
  • have your own money, not normally loans, to run or buy the business.

The fee is SEK 2,000. A permit is granted for up to two years and can be extended.

Living with a partner

If your spouse, registered partner or cohabiting partner lives in Sweden, you can apply to live with them. The agency's requirements include:

  • you must both be over 21, with exceptions only on special grounds;
  • you must currently be outside Sweden, with some exceptions;
  • the person in Sweden must be a Swedish or Nordic citizen, a permanent resident, or hold certain long-term or temporary permits with well-founded prospects of permanent residence;
  • a temporary-permit holder must have lived in Sweden with a permit for at least two years;
  • the person in Sweden must meet the maintenance requirement and have a large enough home.

The fee is SEK 2,000 for adults and SEK 1,000 for children. If you married, the partner in Sweden should register the marriage with the Swedish Tax Agency.

Families of workers

Spouses, registered partners, cohabiting partners and children under 21 can apply with an employee. The worker must meet a maintenance requirement: after rent, income must leave at least SEK 6,243 for a single adult or SEK 10,314 for a cohabiting couple, plus amounts for each child (2025 figures). Adult family members and children who turn 16 during the year can work.

Changing jobs or roles

A Swedish work permit is tied to a specific employer and profession. The Migration Agency states that if you get a job with another employer, you must submit a new application. The same applies if you change profession, take on new duties or your working conditions change in other ways; the old permit is then no longer valid. You can start with the new employer once you have applied, provided you applied before your previous permit expired.

If your application is rejected while you are in Sweden, you must prepare to leave the country.

Who does not need a work permit

The agency lists people who already have the right to work, including holders of a permanent residence permit, students with a residence permit for first- or second-cycle studies, and people with a residence permit to live with someone in Sweden. An American who moves to join a Swedish partner can therefore work without a separate work permit.

Which route fits

| Situation | Route | |---|---| | Job offer from a Swedish employer | Work permit | | High-salary qualified job | EU Blue Card or work permit | | Running your own company | Self-employment permit | | Partner settled in Sweden | Living with someone | | Long stay without work | Visitor's residence permit |

Where to apply

All of these routes are applied for through the Migration Agency's e-services, and most first applications must be made before you travel. You indicate which Swedish embassy or consulate-general you will visit to present your passport or be interviewed. Documents must be in Swedish or English, with certified translations.

Common questions

Does Sweden have a digital nomad visa? No. The Migration Agency's routes are tied to employment, self-employment, family ties, study or visits. A visitor's residence permit does not allow work.

What salary do I need for a Swedish work permit? From 16 June 2026, at least SEK 34,470 a month, 90% of the median salary, and in line with collective agreements.

Can I apply for a work permit while visiting Sweden? A first-time work permit must be applied for from outside Sweden, with limited exceptions listed by the Migration Agency.

How much money do I need for a self-employment permit? At least SEK 200,000 for yourself, plus SEK 100,000 for a spouse and SEK 50,000 per child, and your own funds to run the business.
