A US passport gets you into Hungary for a short Schengen visit. Living there means a residence permit, and Hungary issues each permit for one purpose with its own rules on work, family members and renewals. The immigration authority is the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing (NDGAP, in Hungarian OIF), and its factsheets at oif.gov.hu are the official reference for everything in this guide.
The routes most Americans look at are the White Card for remote workers, the EU Blue Card for skilled jobs, the guest investor permit, and family reunification. They differ sharply on one point that catches people out: some permits block your family from joining you and block you from switching to another purpose later. Read that part of each section before you choose.
The short version
- Remote worker for a foreign employer or your own foreign company: the White Card. Income of at least EUR 3,000 net per month, valid for up to 1 year, extendable once.
- Hired for a highly qualified job in Hungary: the EU Blue Card, valid for up to 4 years and renewable.
- Investor: the guest investor residence permit, based on a EUR 250,000 real estate fund share or a EUR 1,000,000 donation to a qualifying university, valid for up to 10 years.
- Joining a family member: a residence permit for family reunification, but only if the family member holds a permit type that allows it.
Where you can apply as an American
Hungary is friendlier than many EU countries on this point. NDGAP's factsheets for the White Card, the employment permit and the EU Blue Card all state that a national of a visa-free country who does not already hold a Hungarian residence permit can file the first application inside Hungary during a legal stay. As a US citizen you can therefore enter visa-free and apply either online through the Enter Hungary platform or in person at the NDGAP regional directorate covering your address.
You can also apply before you travel at a Hungarian embassy or consulate in the country of your nationality or habitual residence. In that case there is no separate visa application: an approved residence permit application comes with a type D entry visa, which NDGAP describes as single-entry, valid for 3 months and allowing a stay of up to 30 days to collect the permit. If you do not enter Hungary within 3 months of approval, the approval lapses.
Two practical points apply to every route. Applications filed through Enter Hungary count as received only once the fee is paid and your photo, fingerprints and signature are recorded within 15 days. Permits are mailed to the delivery address you give on the form.
The White Card for digital nomads
NDGAP grants the White Card to a third-country national who either has a verified employment relationship outside Hungary and works from Hungary using digital technology, or owns a share in a company with verified profit outside Hungary and works or manages that company from Hungary.
The conditions that matter most:
- Income: at least EUR 3,000 net per month for at least 6 months before entry, kept up for the whole stay. Proof is a bank statement for the previous 6 months, or a certificate of regular income from your employer or a tax authority.
- No local work: you may not pursue any gainful activity in Hungary or hold a share in a Hungarian company. NDGAP withdraws the permit if you work for a Hungarian employer or acquire a Hungarian company share.
- Duration: up to 1 year, extendable once for another year.
- Processing: NDGAP lists an administrative period of 21 days and a decision on the merits within 30 days of submission.
The limits are what make the White Card a short-term option. While you hold it and after it expires, you cannot apply for a residence permit for another purpose. Your family members cannot get family reunification permits on the strength of your White Card; the only exception NDGAP lists is a child born in Hungary while the permit is valid. Holders also cannot be granted a national residence card, Hungary's long-term status. Plan the White Card as a stay of up to 2 years, not a path to settling.
The White Card is also not available to anyone who meets the conditions for certain other permits, including guest investor or employment permits.
Working for a Hungarian employer
Hungary's general residence permit for the purpose of employment is not the route for Americans. NDGAP states that under Government Decree 450/2024 it is available to nationals of the countries in Annex 1 of that decree, which currently lists Georgia, Armenia and the Philippines.
For a US citizen hired into a skilled job, the relevant permit is the EU Blue Card. NDGAP grants it for a position that requires a high level of professional qualification, where you hold the tertiary qualification the job requires or relevant high-level professional experience. For executives and information and communication technology specialists, at least 3 years of relevant experience within the 7 years before applying counts as that qualification.
Key points from the NDGAP factsheet:
- You need a preliminary agreement or contract for at least 6 months of employment.
- The minimum gross monthly pay NDGAP lists for 2026 is HUF 1,001,048, with a lower figure of HUF 800,838 for listed healthcare professions.
- The card is valid for up to 4 years and can be extended for up to 4 years at a time.
- Your employer can file the application on your behalf through Enter Hungary, with your written consent.
- A change of employer, a change of job, a terminated contract or an extra part-time job requires an application to extend the card.
- NDGAP decides on the merits within 70 days of submission.
Blue Card applications are handled under Hungary's single application procedure, which authorizes both the stay and the employment with a named employer.
The guest investor residence permit
This permit is for third-country nationals whose investment in Hungary is in the national economic interest. NDGAP recognizes two investments:
- an investment fund share of at least EUR 250,000 issued by a real estate fund registered by the Hungarian National Bank, held for at least 5 years, or
- a donation of at least EUR 1,000,000 for education, scientific research or artistic activities to a higher education institution maintained by a public trust with a public-service mission.
The fund rules are detailed. The fund must have at least 40% of its net asset value in Hungarian residential real estate, and its manager must appear on the qualified list NDGAP links from its factsheet. You must also show that the fund shares are held in a securities sub-account blocked for at least 5 years.
Unlike the other routes, the first guest investor application can only be submitted in Hungary. As a visa-free national you file it within 30 days of your first legal entry. After applying you must submit proof that the investment has been made. The permit is valid for up to 10 years and can be extended once for up to another 10 years. It lets you work without restrictions, including as a self-employed person or as chief executive of a company, and NDGAP refers to a related family reunification permit for family members.
Family reunification
NDGAP's list of family members who can qualify includes the spouse or registered partner of the sponsor, minor children of the sponsor and the spouse, and dependent minor children where the sponsor or spouse has custody.
The catch is the sponsor's own permit. According to NDGAP's guidance for employers, family reunification may not be issued if the sponsor holds a White Card, an employment permit, a guest worker permit, a seasonal employment permit, a study or training permit, or has held a guest self-employment permit for less than a year. Families moving together should pick a principal permit that allows family members, such as the EU Blue Card or the guest investor permit.
A family member who wants to work can do so if the permit is issued or extended in a single application procedure, which means adding the employment appendix to the family reunification application.
Which route fits
- You work remotely for a US employer and plan a stay of up to 2 years, alone: the White Card.
- You have a Hungarian job offer for a skilled role: the EU Blue Card.
- You have the capital and want a long permit that allows any work: the guest investor permit.
- Your family is coming with you: check that your own permit allows family reunification before you apply.
Common questions
Can a US citizen apply for a Hungarian residence permit after arriving visa-free? For the White Card and the EU Blue Card, yes. NDGAP lets visa-free nationals without a Hungarian residence permit apply in Hungary during a legal stay. The guest investor permit must be applied for in Hungary, within 30 days of first entry for visa-free nationals.
Can my spouse join me in Hungary on my White Card? No. NDGAP states that family members of a White Card holder or applicant cannot get a family reunification permit. The only exception is a child born in Hungary while the White Card is valid.
How much income do I need for Hungary's White Card? At least EUR 3,000 net per month for at least 6 months before entry, and you must keep that income for your whole stay.
How long is a Hungarian guest investor permit valid? Up to 10 years, and it can be extended once for up to another 10 years.
