Belize runs its visitor rules on a 30-day cycle. That single number shapes everything about a long stay there: you arrive, you get a period of up to 30 days, and if you want to stay on, you go to an Immigration Office and extend. This guide sets out what the Department of Immigration and Nationality Services (immigration.gov.bz), part of the Ministry of Immigration, Governance and Labour, publishes about visitor stays, extensions and the step up to residence, as checked on the date at the top of this page.

The 30-day baseline

Belize Immigration's visa page explains it directly. A Belize entry visa allows you to enter Belize and remain legal there for a maximum of 30 days from the date of entry. If you will be staying longer than 30 days, you need to visit an Immigration Office to extend your stay, and the permit used for that is the Visitor's Permit Extension.

The same page adds a sentence that matters for anyone planning a long visit: even if you do not need a visa to enter Belize, or are exempt from applying for one, any visit exceeding 30, 60, 90 and 180 days requires a visa and the requisite extensions to remain legal in Belize. In practice, the visitor regime is built around renewing in 30-day steps rather than receiving one long stamp at the airport.

Does an American need a Belize visa?

The visa page carries a nationality lookup table with two columns: whether a visa is required, and after how many days of stay a visa becomes necessary. Use it with "United States" before you fly. The table is the department's own answer for your nationality, and it shows whether a visa kicks in after a certain number of days in the country.

The page also lists exemptions for visits of no more than 30 days, which matter if you travel with someone who is not a US citizen:

  • holders of a valid multiple-entry US visa or a US Permanent Residence Card;
  • holders of a valid multiple-entry Schengen visa;
  • holders of a valid multiple-entry Canadian visa or Canadian Permanent Residence Card.

Belize's visa fee page notes that its fees do not apply to US permanent residents or to people holding a US visitor visa. For nationals who do need a visa, the department lists a single-entry visa (valid six months) at BZ$200 for most nationalities, with higher fees for some listed countries. All Belize Immigration fees are quoted in Belize dollars and have been in effect since 1 May 2020.

Passport validity and supporting documents

The visa requirements page says your passport must be valid for more than six months, and that a visitor's flight itinerary should show expected arrival in Belize and return to the country of origin (or onward departure if transiting). These are listed as visa application documents. A US citizen arriving visa-free should still keep a passport with comfortable validity and proof of onward travel on hand, since they show the officer the same facts.

For sponsored visa applicants, the department also lists a letter of financial support, sponsor identification, proof of kinship, an invitation letter, an employment letter and bank records. Self-sponsored applicants show an employment letter and bank records.

How the Visitor's Permit Extension works

The extension is the core tool for anyone staying past the first month. Belize Immigration states:

  • What it gives you: an additional 30 days in Belize.
  • Fee: BZ$200.00 for all nationals, in effect since 1 May 2020.
  • Who qualifies: people who want to extend their holidays in Belize, or people investigating the possibilities of settlement.
  • Conditions: the holder may not take employment, paid or unpaid, and may not engage in any business or profession without the consent of the Director of Immigration, and may not remain in Belize beyond the permit's expiry.
  • Visa holders: holders of a Belize visa may qualify. Anyone who needs a visa after a set number of extended days must get that visa before a further extension is issued.
  • Where: your nearest Immigration Office, which also tells you whether you qualify.

Two practical points follow from this. First, each extension is 30 days, so a stay of several months means several office visits and several BZ$200 fees. Second, the "investigating the possibilities of settlement" wording tells you the extension is the sanctioned way to scout a move, as long as you do not work.

What happens if you overstay

The extension conditions say plainly that you may not remain in Belize beyond the expiry of your permit, and the visa page says longer visits require extensions "to remain legal". Belize Immigration's public pages do not publish a set overstay fine or a per-day penalty, so this guide does not quote one. The safe reading is simple: get to an Immigration Office before your current 30 days run out, and treat any lapse as a matter to raise with the office directly.

If you are already past your date, contact the US Embassy in Belize as well. Its American Citizen Services page covers passports, arrests of US citizens, victims of crime and other emergencies, and it posts alerts for US citizens.

Working is a separate permit

The extension rules exclude employment and business without the Director's consent. Belize Immigration lists separate permits for work (the Temporary Employment Permit), study and dependents. If you plan to earn money in Belize, start from the work permit page rather than from your visitor status.

When extensions turn into residence

For people who want to stay for the long term, Belize Immigration publishes temporary and permanent residence routes:

  • Temporary residence is valid for one year only and may be renewed every year. Its fee is one fifth of the permanent residence fee for your nationality.
  • Permanent residence fees depend on nationality and are listed in Belize dollars: BZ$1,000 for CARICOM countries, BZ$1,500 for Central American countries, Mexico and the Dominican Republic, BZ$3,000 for Commonwealth countries, BZ$6,000 for European countries, and BZ$4,000 for other countries. The fee for minors is 50 percent of the adult fee. Check the nationality lookup on the residence fee page for the United States.
  • Processing: the department says residence takes a minimum of three months to approve and includes an immigration interview and a police interview.
  • Lost card: replacing a lost, stolen or mutilated residence card costs BZ$300 and requires a police report.

Checklist for a long stay in Belize

  1. Look up "United States" in the nationality table on the Belize Immigration visa page.
  2. Travel with a passport valid for more than six months and proof of your return or onward flight.
  3. Mark the date your first 30 days end.
  4. Before that date, go to an Immigration Office for a Visitor's Permit Extension: 30 more days for BZ$200.
  5. Repeat on each 30-day cycle, and check whether a visa becomes required for your nationality at the 60, 90 or 180 day marks.
  6. Do not work or run a business on visitor status without the Director of Immigration's consent.
  7. If you are staying for good, look at temporary residence (one year, renewable) and plan for at least three months of processing.

US government help in Belize

The US Embassy in Belize sits in Belmopan. Its services pages cover US passport renewal and replacement abroad, notarial services, help for victims of crime and arrests, and it runs passport acceptance events outside Belmopan from time to time. Enroll in the State Department's Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive the embassy's alerts while you are there.

Common questions

How long can a US citizen stay in Belize as a visitor? Belize Immigration says a visitor may remain legally for a maximum of 30 days from the date of entry. Longer stays require a Visitor's Permit Extension from an Immigration Office.

How much does a Belize visitor extension cost? The Visitor's Permit Extension costs BZ$200.00 for all nationals and gives an additional 30 days. The fee has been in effect since 1 May 2020.

What is the fine for overstaying in Belize? Belize Immigration's public pages do not publish a set overstay fine. The extension conditions say you may not remain beyond your permit's expiry, so extend at an Immigration Office before your 30 days end.

Can I work in Belize on a visitor extension? No. The extension conditions bar paid or unpaid employment and any business or profession without the consent of the Director of Immigration. Work needs a Temporary Employment Permit.
